Carte grise & malus estimate

Enter your region, puissance fiscale (P.6), and vehicle details. We estimate taxe régionale (Y1), fixed gestion / acheminement fees, and optional malus écologique for a first French registration. Confirm with the official Service-Public simulator before you pay ANTS.

Malus applies mainly on first French registration of tourism cars. EVs and hydrogen are treated as exempt here. Combined CO2 + weight malus is capped at €80,000 (2026).

    How it works

France has no UK-style annual road tax for private cars

When people search for “France road tax,” they usually mean the one-off certificat d’immatriculation (carte grise) paid at registration or change of owner, plus — for many new cars — the malus écologique (CO2 and weight).

This calculator builds a drive-to-register total: regional tax (Y1) + optional malus (Y2/Y3) + fixed gestion and postage fees (Y4/Y5).

    Y1 regional tax

Cheval fiscal rates differ by region in 2026

    Region€ / CV (2026)
    Île-de-France68.95 (incl. €14 surcharge from 1 Mar 2026)
    BFC / Bretagne / Centre / Grand Est / Normandie / PACA / Réunion60 (ceiling)
    Occitanie59.50
    Nouvelle-Aquitaine58 (from 1 Mar 2026)
    Corse / Martinique53
    Pays de la Loire51
    Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes / Hauts-de-France43 (HdF from 1 Apr 2026)
    Guadeloupe / Guyane / Mayotte41 / 42.50 / 30

Y1 = puissance fiscale (P.6) × regional €/CV. Vehicles over 10 years get a 50% reduction on the regional tax. Some regions still cut or waive Y1 for clean vehicles (e.g. Corse and Pays de la Loire full EV exemption; Hauts-de-France 50% from April 2026).

    Malus écologique

CO2 and weight malus on first registration

For a first registration in France of a tourism car, malus CO2 starts at 108 g/km (50 €) and reaches the 80 000 € cap from 192 g/km. Malus masse applies from 1 500 kg masse en ordre de marche (field G), with marginal €/kg bands. Combined CO2 + weight cannot exceed 80 000 €.

Electric and hydrogen vehicles are treated as exempt from malus in this tool. Family, disability, E85 and import décote abatements are not fully modelled — use Service-Public for edge cases.

    Fixed fees

    Y4 gestion and Y5 acheminement

Most certificates also include a fixed taxe de gestion (Y4) of 11 € and a redevance d’acheminement (Y5) of about 2.76 €. They are small compared with Y1 and malus but are part of the official total.

    Used cars

Change of owner usually means Y1 + fixed fees

A standard changement de titulaire on a used car already registered in France typically does not re-trigger malus. You still pay regional tax (with the 10-year half-rate when eligible) plus Y4/Y5. Malus mainly hits new cars and some first French registrations of imported vehicles.

ANTS and Service-Public remain the source of truth

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Choose your region, enter puissance fiscale (P.6), energy type, age band, and whether this is a first French registration. The tool estimates Y1 regional tax, optional CO2 and weight malus, and fixed Y4/Y5 fees.

Not for ordinary private cars. There is no UK-style yearly VED. The main costs are the one-off carte grise (certificat d immatriculation) and, for many new cars, ecological malus at first registration.

Y1 = fiscal horsepower (CV on field P.6) multiplied by your region s euro-per-CV rate. Vehicles over 10 years get a 50 percent reduction on that regional tax.

In 2026 malus CO2 starts at 108 g/km WLTP (50 euro) and reaches the 80,000 euro cap from 192 g/km. Amounts are fixed per gram in the official bareme.

Tax on masse en ordre de marche applies from 1,500 kg with marginal bands (10 to 30 euro per kg). Combined with CO2 malus it cannot exceed 80,000 euro.

EVs are generally exempt from malus CO2 and weight malus. Regional Y1 exemptions vary: some regions still waive or cut regional tax for clean vehicles; others have ended free carte grise.

Usually no for a standard change of owner of a car already registered in France. Malus mainly applies on first registration in France.

Y4 is the fixed gestion tax (11 euro). Y5 is the acheminement / postage fee (about 2.76 euro). Both appear on most certificates.

From March 2026 IDF applies a higher effective rate of 68.95 euro per CV, including a 14 euro transport surcharge on top of the regional base.
